Students are suspended from school for a variety of reasons. The major reasons are disrespect toward school staff, fighting and repeated misconduct. In 2010-11, 1,817 felonies, 2,692 misdemeanors and 688 other offenses were committed by juveniles in Orange County. In addition, each year up to 2,000 students are processed at one central site after being picked up by law enforcement for truancy. Our goal is to provide transitional education for out-of-school suspended students, kindergarten through high school seniors. So that they do not lose valuable classroom instructional time. Program attendance is a healthy alternative to staying at home, loitering in neighborhood, the mall or other often unproductive venues that can present a barrier to positive learning and social development. We believe that our program offers a safe place for your child to continue their educational pursuit with supervision, certified staff, academic excellence, lunch, classroom assignments, technology and all other tools needed during this transitional time to be productive. The alternatives to NOT having this program available could be an academic, social, and emotional distress for families.
Objectives:
-
To decrease students potential involvement with the Department of Juvenile Justice
-
To increase knowledge of acceptable social behaviors and modifications resulting in the reduction of additional suspension.
-
To increase the number of backlogged (incomplete) assignments that results in the students being up-to-date with assignments.
-
To improve and assist parental/guardians knowledge and skills effectiveness in working with schools Administrator and Student Code of Conduct Responses.
-
To successfully transition 100% of attendees, back to school.
-
To increase attendance during suspension verses students being home absent and failing.
Keeping UP
also provides counseling with regard for the students' individual code of conduct infraction. Also correlating academics the home school administrator deems necessary for the student to stay on track during their suspension.
